On January 30, 2025, an explosion occurred at the Rheinmetall Expal Munitions factory in Javalí Viejo, Murcia, Spain, resulting in six injuries. The incident took place around 4:20 p.m. local time. The injured individuals, all men aged between 30 and 52, suffered various injuries, including burns and smoke inhalation.
One person is in serious condition, another moderately injured, and four sustained light injuries. Five of the injured were transported to hospitals in Murcia, while one received treatment at the scene.
The explosion led to a fire that affected approximately 3,000 square meters of nearby scrubland. Fifteen firefighters with four vehicles responded to the scene and successfully extinguished the blaze. The cause of the explosion is currently under investigation, with local authorities examining a possible powder magazine involvement.
Rheinmetall, the German arms manufacturer that owns the facility, stated there is no evidence to suggest the explosion was an attack. The company confirmed that the production facilities were undamaged, and no production losses are expected. The Javalí Viejo site employs 427 people and produces powder for both military and civilian applications.
Rheinmetall is one of Europe's largest arms manufacturers, supplying weapons, ammunition, and equipment to various countries, including Ukraine. In June 2024, the company opened a military vehicle repair facility in Ukraine, the first of four planned in the country.
This incident is not the first at this facility. Approximately a year ago, two workers suffered severe burns due to a solvent fire at the same plant.
Local authorities continue to investigate the cause of the explosion, aiming to prevent future incidents and ensure the safety of workers and nearby residents.
