GEORGIA JUDGE FOUND DEAD IN HIS OWN OFFICE COURTROOM

Judge Stephen Yekel, aged 74, was discovered deceased inside the Effingham County State Courthouse on Tuesday morning, marking his final day on the bench following an unsuccessful re-election bid, according to WSAV. Authorities believe his death occurred late Monday night or early Tuesday morning.

The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation have launched an inquiry into his passing. Yekel, appointed to the state court in 2022, had recently sought to resign, but his request was declined by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, WJCL reported.

Sheriff Jimmy McDuffie extended sympathies to Yekel’s family, expressing the emotional toll of the loss. “This is a devastating time for the family. This season is supposed to bring joy, but they’re now faced with this tragedy. We’re here to assist them in any way they need,” he stated.

Yekel, a married father of four, had a distinguished career as an assistant district attorney in Chatham County and a special agent with Georgia’s Alcohol & Tobacco Tax Unit. His tenure as judge, however, faced challenges, including a lawsuit filed by court employee Lisa Crawford, who alleged wrongful termination. Crawford claimed Yekel dismissed her to replace staff upon assuming office.

The Effingham County Board of Commissioners released a statement mourning Yekel’s death: The Effingham County Board of Commissioners and staff are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Judge Steve Yekel at the courthouse. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.”

The courtroom has remained closed since the discovery and will resume operations on January 2.
