The UK’s illegal population comprises those who have crossed the English Channel in small boats, failed asylum seekers, and individuals who have overstayed their visas.
So far in 2024, 26,612 people have crossed the Channel in 503 boats—a 5% increase since 2023.
Meanwhile, the UK faces a staggering backlog of 224,742 asylum seekers still awaiting decisions on their claims or appealing rejections.
