At a security summit, world leaders unanimously emphasized the crucial importance of mitigating the risks associated with the rapid development of emerging artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.
The inaugural Artificial Intelligence Security Summit, hosted by UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak at Bletchley Park, began on Wednesday, November 1. Leaders from 28 countries, including the United States and China, agreed on a "shared agreement and responsibility" regarding AI risks. They plan to hold further meetings later this year in South Korea and France.
Leaders, including Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission; Kamala Harris, Vice President of the United States; and António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, discussed their respective testing models to ensure safety in the development of AI.
On Thursday, the summit continued with targeted dialogues among a small group of countries referred to by the UK as "like-minded nations with shared values." The leaders of this group represented the EU, the UN, Italy, Germany, France, and Australia.
Some leaders, including Sunak, expressed concerns that immediate and widespread regulation might hinder progress. They emphasized the need to avoid stifling AI companies before the technology reaches its full potential.
During a press conference on Thursday, Sunak announced another milestone agreement reached by the countries, pledging to collectively test the safety of new AI models before their release.
Participating countries in the discussions included the United States, the EU, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Canada, and Australia. China did not participate in the talks on the second day.
At the end of the summit, Sunak and billionaire Elon Musk held a discussion in front of an invited audience of business leaders and journalists.
Musk praised the inclusion of China in the AI security agreement. Some criticized the decision to invite China, especially as several Western governments reduced their technological collaboration with the country. Musk emphasized the importance of joint efforts by the United States, the UK, and China to promote AI safety.
